The General Category candidate appearing for the UPSC civil services examination has 6 attempts. And the minimum age limit for the general category is 21 years and the maximum age limit is 32 years.
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) sets specific age for different categories. For OBC categories, the minimum age limit is 21 years and the maximum age limit is 35 years. In the case of attempts, an OBC candidate has 9 attempts.
The SC candidates appearing for the UPSC civil services examination have unlimited attempts till they reach the age of 37 years. The upper age limit for SC candidates is 37 years and the lower age limit is 21 years.
UPSC age limit for female: UPSC does not provide any specific relaxation for female candidates. However, there is age relaxation based on the category of female candidates:
Know your date of birth - The commission accepts matriculation certificates to obtain the age of the candidate. This is the official age of the candidate.
Exam year - Check your age on the 1st of August of the exam year and the candidate shouldn't attain the maximum age before the 1st August of the exam year.
Example - A general candidate who turns 32 before the 1st of August of the exam year is not eligible but if the general candidate turns 32 after the 1st of August of the exam year, then he/she is eligible for the UPSC CSE. This rule applies to the upper age limit of each category.

UPSC calculates the candidate’s age as of August 01 of the exam year. For example, if xyz intends to attempt UPSC CSE Prelims 2025, and turn 32 before August 01, 2025, then xyz is not eligible.
There is an upper age limit for each category. For the general candidate, the upper age limit is 32 years, 35 for the OBC category and 37 for the SC/STs category. But, as per the guidelines, a candidate should not attain the upper age of their category before the 1st of August of the exam year.
Appearance in the UPSC CSE preliminary exam counts as an attempt. However, only application submissions are not counted as attempts.
